IOC officially announces Dow sponsorship deal -

NEW YORK (AP)—Dow Chemical announced its new 10-year deal with the International Olympic Committee on Friday, making it the official “chemistry company” for the games.

The American giant became a top-tier sponsor through 2020. Olympic and Dow officials declined to reveal terms, but IOC marketing commission chairman Gerhard Heiberg said the value of deals was increasing even with the global financial crisis. Each four-year IOC sponsorship contract usually goes for up to $100 million.

“The five Olympic rings are the only medium that we have in the world that is recognized by 95 percent of the global population,” said Dow vice president Heinz Haller. “Developing countries, developed countries, mature economies, emerging economies.”

ITTIGEN, Switzerland (AP)—Switzerland’s Olympic committee says the country is capable of hosting the 2022 Winter Games and will form a strategy to present a bid to the International Olympic Committee.

The Swiss Olympic body said Friday that a report it commissioned concludes that the Alpine nation could proceed with a bid.

Rogge to discuss possible bid with Zuma -

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)—IOC president Jacques Rogge will discuss the possibility of a South African bid for the Olympics when he meets with the country’s president next month.

Rogge said Wednesday he will raise the issue when he holds talks with Jacob Zuma in Johannesburg on the weekend of the July 11 World Cup final.

South Africa is the first African country to host the soccer showcase. Based on the success of the tournament, South Africa could try to become the first nation on the continent to stage the Olympics.
