Headscarf issue solved, Iran girls focus on soccer -

SINGAPORE (AP)—The Iranian girls soccer team can concentrate on winning matches at the Youth Olympics now that the controversy over their headscarves has been settled.

The Iranians lost to Turkey in their opening match on Thursday but have a chance for a victory in the six-nation tournament against Papua New Guinea on Sunday.

The compromise outfit consists of a cap, long-sleeved tops, below-knee trousers and long stockings. The new white apparel was created by Iranian designers and has red-and-green details in the colors of the Iranian flag.

23 Jun 2010To celebrate Olympic Day, London 2012 has announced that over five million children and young people from around the world are benefiting from the London 2012 Games through the international legacy programme, International Inspiration.

International Inspiration is the result of the promise made in 2005 to use the London 2012 Games to reach young people around the world and connect them to the inspirational power of the Games – inspiring them to choose sport. It aims to provide high-quality physical education, sport and play opportunities to children and young people across the globe. The aim is to reach 12 million children in 20 countries by 2012. International Inspiration is already changing the lives of young people in 13 countries – Azerbaijan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Jordan, India, Malaysia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palau, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey and Zambia.

CALGARY '€” At the age of 17, Megan Gunning already has a strong resume when it comes to the high-altitude world of ski halfpipe.

The Grade 11 student at the National Sports School placed second at the 2009 world championship and she won silver at the 2010 Winter X Games.

VANCOUVER '€” The body of Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was slated to leave Vancouver Monday afternoon and arrive in his home country of Georgia Tuesday.

The 21-year-old athlete was killed in a training run Friday, the opening day of the Winter Games.

Figure skating-From coffee table to the Olympic rink -

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Tugba Karademir scrambled on top of the coffee table aged three to announce to her mother she wanted to be just like twice Olympic champion Katarina Witt.

No matter that there was only one ice rink in Turkey in the 1980s and her homeland had never had an Olympic figure skater.

After a kindergarten trip to the Ankara rink sealed her love for skating, she left for Canada with her parents a few years later to pursue her dream and in 2006 Turkey had its first Olympian in the sport.

Alpine Skiing: First Iranian woman skier ready for Canada slopes -

Dizin (AFP) - Marjan Kalhor, who never imagined she would one day become the first Iranian woman to take part in the Olympic Winter Games, insists her moment of history will not fall foul of her country's conservative rulers.

Kalhor will compete in the Alpine slalom and giant slalom categories at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games from February 12 to 28.
