VANCOUVER '€” On 10 occasions over the years, John Furlong has given a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade.

As regular as clockwork every fall, the main face of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics took the stage to talk about the progress in bringing the Games to Canada. He would talk about the financial struggles, the need for volunteers, the sport challenges and even the Vancouver Games in context to other Olympics.

WHISTLER '€” The 2010 Paralympics, breaking new records in attendance and visibility around the world, closed out in a flash of colour and patriotism Sunday night as athletes from around the world gathered under a basketball court-sized Canadian flag and wished the Games goodbye.

VANCOUVER - First it was no gold. Then it was not even a medal.

Canada'€™s sledge hockey team, the reigning Paralympic champions, will leave Vancouver as the fourth place country after stunningly losing the bronze medal game 2-1 to Norway Friday on a deflected shot from the blueline with 3.6 seconds remaining.

Paralympic torch relay and ceremonies in Greater Victoria -

The Paralympic torch relay started in Esquimalt and then proceeded by boat to Victoria. Dave Dewhirst gets the hand off from the first person to carry the torch, Capt. Trevor Greene, a reservist who suffered a severe head injury in a 2006 axe attack during a village meeting in Afghanistan. Greene, now 45, is still recovering and learning to walk on his own in VICTORIA B.C. February  12, 2010. More Images »  Debra Brash, Times Colonist

VICTORIA '€” Trevor Greene won a gold medal Saturday in the hearts of those who watched the former Canadian Forces reservist push his wheelchair slowly down Lyall Street in Esquimalt, moving the Paralymic flame on the first of a 31-leg tour of Greater Victoria.

No one put more effort into the task than Greene, a former Canadian Forces reservist who was struck in the head with an axe in Afghanistan in 2006, leaving him paralyzed and unable to breathe without assistance.

RICHMOND '€” In a sport that doesn't exactly offer the traditional trappings of superstardom, Shani Davis still does his best to play the diva.

Aloof, imperious, he moves in his own self-contained world, demanding and expecting preferential treatment. If he was an opera singer, you could sort of understand Davis's act. But he's a speed skater, for pity's sake which, in the world of sports, makes him a member of the chorus.
