Cyclist Rebellin loses Olympic doping appeal -

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)—Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin lost an appeal Friday of a decision stripping him of his 2008 Olympic silver medal for doping. He could now be suspended by cycling’s governing body and stripped of other race results.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the International Olympic Committee was right to disqualify Rebellin after he tested positive for the banned blood-boosting drug CERA.

11th Olympic worldwide partner announced

28 Jul 2010The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that Procter and Gamble (P&G) will join The Olympic Partners (TOP) Programme.


P&G will be an official Olympic worldwide partner in the ‘personal care and household products’ category until 2020, including the London 2012 Olympic Games. As part of the agreement, P&G will also partner the IOC and the National Olympic Committees around the world.

India ramps up pressure on sports federations -

NEW DELHI (AP)—The Indian government is threatening to cut off funding to sports federations that refuse to comply with controversial age and tenure limitations, a move that is likely to put the authorities further at odds with the International Olympic Committee.

Angry that more than a third of the 68 associations have ignored the new regulations, Sports Minister M S Gill told the Press Trust of India that only those that comply will be eligible for financial grants and other benefits.

LONDON (AP)—Tuesday marks the two-year countdown to the London Olympics. And organizers want to show that the multibillion-dollar extravaganza offers good value at a time of economic austerity.

London will celebrate the milestone by beginning a search for Olympic volunteers and opening some venues to athletes. They will test facilities where they will be competing after the games open July 27, 2012.

Britain seeks sponsors for London 2012 athletes -

LONDON (AP)—Britain’s Olympic and elite sports bodies urged small businesses Monday to invest $23 million in developing athletes for the 2012 London Games.

Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said “supporting the Olympics is not just something big multinationals can do.” Sports funding in Britain is provided by the government and National Lottery.

The initiative called Team 2012 wants 750 firms to invest more than $30,000 each to help reach a nearly $39 million fundraising target. Visa and private donations will also contribute. British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan said the goal has been halfway met.
