No mea culpa, just whitewash over luger’s death -

PARIS (AP)—The International Luge Federation’s 20-page—is that all his death deserved?—report into the horrific accident that killed Georgian Olympian Nodar Kumaritashvili is exactly what was expected: a self-serving whitewash.

His crash couldn’t be foreseen, the FIL claims.

No single reason for Georgian luger’s fatal crash – FIL (Reuters) -

BERLIN, April 19 (Reuters) - The death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, killed during a training run at the Vancouver Olympics, was not caused by one single event, the International Luge Federation (FIL) said on Monday.

Kumaritashvili lost control and slammed into an exposed steel pillar during his last training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre on Feb. 12, hours before the Games’ opening ceremony.

Report due next week into fatal Olympic luge crash (PA SportsTicker) -

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND(AP) —The IOC says an official report into the accident that killed luger Nodar Kumaritashvili at the Vancouver Olympics will be published next week.

International Luge Federation leaders delivered their findings to Olympic officials on Monday.

The International Olympic Committee said the investigation “covers the immediate circumstances of the accident and the response by the concerned authorities.” The IOC said the report will be shown to Kumaritashvili’s family before being made public next Monday.

IOC receives final report on Georgian luger’s death (Reuters) -

BERLIN, April 12 (Reuters) - Olympic officials have started studying an International Luge Federation (FIL) report into the death of Georgian athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili, who was killed during a training run at the Vancouver Olympics.

“We have received the report (from the FIL) this morning and are looking into the findings,” an IOC official told Reuters on Monday.

Luge leaders to complete fatal crash probe -

GENEVA (AP)—The leaders of the International Luge Federation will meet in Austria this weekend to complete their investigation into the accident that killed Nodar Kumaritashvili at the Vancouver Olympics.

Officials from the federation’s sport and technical commissions hope to sign off on a report analyzing the 21-year-old Georgian’s crash at the Whistler Sliding Center, the world’s fastest track.

AP Interview: official says no 1 reason for death -

GENEVA (AP)—An official investigation into the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili at the Vancouver Olympics will find no single cause for his fatal luge accident.

Svein Romstad, secretary general of the International Luge Federation, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the FIL report is set to describe the 21-year-old Georgian’s crash at 90 mph on Whistler’s sliding track as something that could not have been foreseen.

“Everybody wants a scapegoat and to say, ‘It was that person’ (to blame),” Romstad, the report’s lead writer, said.

Luge panel to issue report into Georgian’s death (PA SportsTicker) -

BERCHTESGADEN, GERMANY(AP) —The International Luge Federation will publish a final report next month into the death of the Georgian luger killed in a training crash at the Vancouver Olympics.

The federation said Thursday that its sport and technical commissions will meet April 9-11 near Salzburg, Austria.

BAKURIANI, Georgia(AP)—The head of the Vancouver Olympics, an Olympic gold medalist and other dignitaries attended a ceremony Tuesday at the grave of the Georgian luger who died during a practice run at the games.

Vancouver organizing committee president John Furlong, luge gold medalist Felix Loch, International Luge Federation president Josef Fendt and other athletes and officials came to the hometown of Nodar Kumaritashvili, who died hours before the opening of the games on Feb. 12.

John Furlong, the head of the Vancouver organizers, was invited to Tuesday’s memorial by the family of Nodar Kumaritashvili.

The service is taking place 40 days after Kumaritashvili’s death, in accordance with Christian orthodox traditions.
