London 2012 outlines vision for welcoming the Olympic Flame to the UK

26 May 2010The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today announced that the Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK on Friday 18 May 2012 and will travel around the UK for 70 days, arriving in London the weekend before the 2012 Games begin.

The love story between Shira and Jeff Standfield began on the water.

The two former Paralympians, and elite adaptive rowers, first met while training for the 2006 World Rowing Championships in the U.K. and married in September.

Paralympic torch relay and ceremonies in Greater Victoria -

The Paralympic torch relay started in Esquimalt and then proceeded by boat to Victoria. Dave Dewhirst gets the hand off from the first person to carry the torch, Capt. Trevor Greene, a reservist who suffered a severe head injury in a 2006 axe attack during a village meeting in Afghanistan. Greene, now 45, is still recovering and learning to walk on his own in VICTORIA B.C. February  12, 2010. More Images »  Debra Brash, Times Colonist

VICTORIA '€” Trevor Greene won a gold medal Saturday in the hearts of those who watched the former Canadian Forces reservist push his wheelchair slowly down Lyall Street in Esquimalt, moving the Paralymic flame on the first of a 31-leg tour of Greater Victoria.

No one put more effort into the task than Greene, a former Canadian Forces reservist who was struck in the head with an axe in Afghanistan in 2006, leaving him paralyzed and unable to breathe without assistance.

Paralympic torch relay begins journey to Vancouver 2010 Games -

The Paralympic torch relay began with a ceremony that included an aboriginal blessing at Victoria Island. The flame was placed in a lamp. Native elders Irvin Sarazin of Pikwakanagan (Golden Lake) and Peter Decontie of Kitigazibi Anishabe near Manawaki Q parade the flame before it was taken to Parliament Hill this morning.  PAT McGRATH, Canwest News Service

OTTAWA '€” Dozens of schoolchildren, politicians and the public cheered Canada'€™s torchbearers who carried the Paralympic flame in a relay to Parliament Hill after it was ignited earlier just a few hundred metres away on Ottawa'€™s Victoria Island by Aboriginal firekeepers of the Pikwakanagan and Kitigan Zibi Algonquin bands.

More than 600 torchbearers will carry the flame leading up to the March 12 start of the Paralympic Games in Vancouver, and Ottawa was the first stop. The flame will be taken to Quebec City Thursday, to Toronto on Friday and later to several communities in British Columbia, before the Paralympic cauldron is lit at BC Place in Vancouver, marking the beginning of the 10-day Winter Paralympics.

Vonn’s injury casts shadow as snow arrives -

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - U.S. golden girl and Olympic downhill favorite Lindsey Vonn dropped a bomb on the Winter Games on Wednesday with news of a painful shin injury that may take her out of contention for a clutch of gold medals.

Two days before the Feb 12-28 Games open in Vancouver, organizers did, however, get a welcome break in the weather with flakes falling on snow-starved freestyle skiing and snowboard venue Cypress Mountain.
