COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP)—With the economy spiraling downward and sponsors
running away faster than Usain Bolt, the Olympics needed money.
Big money.
And fast.
So, leaders of Olympic organizations started thinking outside the box,
peddling their famous rings to new companies, selling multimillion-dollar
sponsorship deals to pretty much anyone willing to pay the price.
In the past few weeks, the International and U.S. Olympic committees have
announced a flurry of deals—a long-awaited sign that big-money sponsors are
returning to the rings. The deals, however, have made for some strange
bedfellows—a handful of partnerships that, at first blush, don’t look like
natural fits:

LONDON (AP)—Britain’s Olympic and elite sports bodies urged small businesses
Monday to invest $23 million in developing athletes for the 2012 London Games.
Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said “supporting the Olympics is not just
something big multinationals can do.” Sports funding in Britain is provided by
the government and National Lottery.
The initiative called Team 2012 wants 750 firms to invest more than $30,000
each to help reach a nearly $39 million fundraising target. Visa and private
donations will also contribute. British Olympic Association chairman Colin
Moynihan said the goal has been halfway met.

VANCOUVER ' Heather Moyse is discovering it's not that easy to shift seamlessly from the elite level of one sport to another without hitting some transitional speed bumps along the way.
The gold medallist in the two-women bobsleigh in the February Winter Olympics, the 31-year-old is attempting to restart the promising rugby career she left behind two years ago to chase her dream of gold at the Vancouver Games.

City of Coventry Stadium announced as the new London 2012 Football venue
03 Jun 2010The Ricoh Arena, the home of Coventry City Football Club, has been selected as the new Midlands venue to host Olympic Football matches in 2012. This follows a selection procedure by the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) and means that all venues are now in place for the London Games.
The venue will be temporarily re-named the City of Coventry Stadium for the London 2012 Olympic Games and all other branding will be removed at Games time. The Stadium replaces Villa Park which was ruled out because of planned building development work.
Seb Coe, LOCOG Chair, said: ‘The City of Coventry Stadium is a great venue, and will be an excellent host for Football matches for the London 2012 Olympic Games. It is ideally located in the centre of England and the city already has strong links with London 2012.
