CALGARY '€” At the age of 17, Megan Gunning already has a strong resume when it comes to the high-altitude world of ski halfpipe.

The Grade 11 student at the National Sports School placed second at the 2009 world championship and she won silver at the 2010 Winter X Games.

WHISTLER, B.C. '€” Dmitry Chernyshenko, president and CEO of the Sochi Organizing Committee, says his lasting memory of the 2010 Olympics and Paralympics will be of the people and the passion.

'€œCanadians are very special,'€ Chernyshenko said Friday before a reception to celebrate Russia'€™s Paralympic success and promote the 2014 Games in Sochi.

Snowboard: Canada’s Anderson wins parallel giant slalom -

Vancouver (AFP) - Canadian veteran Jasey Jay Anderson rose to the challange and upset Austrian favourite Benjamin Karl to win the men's snowboard parallel slalom gold on Saturday and spark more celebrations for the host country.

The 34-year-old was behind after his first run but powered through his second in heavy fog on Cypress Mountain to beat Karl, the 2009 parallel slalom world champion, by 0.35sec, with France's Matthieu Bozzetto claiming the bronze.

Mountain springers are here to stay -

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Though Mother Nature provided very little help, the Olympics freestyle skiing events established themselves as a real focal point at Cypress Mountain, providing some of the most exciting moments of the Vancouver Games.

But these Olympics also showed that competition is just as tough here as anywhere in the Games and that some countries are targeting them as a rich seam of gold to be plundered, notably China in the aerials.

Emotional Anderson takes gold -

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Canadian snowboarder Jasey Jay Anderson overcame dismal conditions on Saturday to win gold in the Olympic men's parallel giant slalom watched by his two young daughters.

Anderson thrilled the rain-soaked crowd at the last event on weather-challenged Cypress Mountain as he raced through the dense fog and squeezed past Austria's Benjamin Karl to win.

The Canadian started with a slight time deficit after the first run of the final but made up ground coming down the course and finished a few board lengths ahead of Karl.

Canada top as Poland, Italy break golden ducks -

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Canada bagged another two gold medals on the penultimate day of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Saturday to ensure they will finish at the top of the medal standings.

Sports

It will be the first time Canada has ever topped the medal standings at either the Winter or Summer Olympics following a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes.

Just a week ago, Canada were languishing on four golds amid public demands for a full-scale investigation into their failure to win more, but have piled up another eight golds in the past six days to soar past their rivals.
