WHISTLER '€” Canada's Brian McKeever clinched a golden hat trick Sunday, after taking a gamble and using skate skis in the one-kilometre classic Nordic sprint at Whistler Paralympic Park.

Canada's Brian McKeever has qualified for the semi-finals in the men's one-kilometre sprint in the para-Nordic event, finishing first of all his competitors.

Paralympics opens door to sports for disabled -

WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP)—As a child growing up with cerebral palsy, Karolina Wisniewska used to race against able-bodied skiers. At the time, she had no idea the Paralympics even existed.

“I knew because I was disabled I couldn’t race in the Olympics, so I didn’t really have that dream,” she said.

Visually impaired skier wins more Paralympic gold -

WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP)—Brian McKeever of Canada has won his second gold medal of the Paralympic Games.

McKeever, with brother Robin his guide, won the 10-kilometer classic cross country race for the visually impaired Thursday in 26 minutes 1.6 seconds. Norway’s Helge Flo was second, followed by Russia’s Nikolay Polukhim.

McKeever won the 20-kilometer race Monday. He had been set to become the first winter sport athlete to compete in the Olympics and Paralympics, but the Canadian coaching staff decided not to start him in the 50-kilometer race.

WHISTLER '€” Brian McKeever has won another gold for Canada.

McKeever and his brother Robin, who also serves as his guide, finished at 26.01.6 in the 10-kilometre classic cross-country event at Whistler Paralympic Park. It's their second gold medal of the Games.

Athletes find humor in visually impaired biathlon -

WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP)—Even the Paralympic athletes who compete in biathlon sometimes have a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea of visually impaired people shooting rifles.

“Blind biathlon is a bit of an oxymoron, isn’t it?” joked visually impaired cross country skier Brian McKeever. “The first time I heard about it I laughed.”

WHISTLER '€” In front of a large supportive crowd '€” waving signs spelling out her first name '€” North Vancouver's Lauren Woolstencroft won gold in the women's standing slalom at the Paralympic Games.

She finished a whopping 6.38 seconds ahead of silver medallist Andrea Rothfuss of Germany.

WHISTLER -- The 2008 Olympics in Beijing had Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps. The 2010 Olympics had Lindsey Vonn, Charles Hamelin and a rather remarkable goal by Sidney Crosby.

Canadian biathletes find Paralympic triumph in spirit of Games -

Canada's biathletes didn't come away with any medals here at Whistler Olympic Park on Day 1 of the 2010 Paralympic Games. Victories? That's a whole other story. There was 45-year-old Smithers school teacher Jody Barber placing 10th in the women's three kilometre pursit (standing). She's only been on skis for three years.  Mark van Manen, Vancouver Sun file

Canada’s McKeever turning focus to 3rd Paralympics (PA SportsTicker) -

WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA(AP) —Brian McKeever is turning his focus to another Paralympic Games less than two weeks after having his Olympic dreams dashed.

It’s the only way for McKeever to move past the emotion - from sadness to anger that lingers still - after Canadian coaches made the decision not to let the legally blind cross country skier race in the 2010 Winter Games. It’s also the only way that he can move on to the Paralympic competitions that start on Saturday.

It has not, however, been an easy transition.
