For a country that had never won a medal in Nordic Combined, the Americans have really had a HUGE Olympics.
The Americans were definitely helped by the weather today. I’m beginning to learn a bit more about ski jumping. A tiny bit. Enough to know that a tail wind is not a good thing. You see, I’ve been recently told that ski jumping is not about falling, it’s about flying. You need a head wind for that. Some of the strongest skiers received tail winds that meant they were pretty much out of it before the skiing ever started.
So, going into the cross country portion, Johnny Spillane was second, and Bill Demong was sixth. By the end of the third lap, the front group included Spillane, Demong and Austria’s Bernhard Gruber. This allowed Spillane and Demong to work together to an extent. But when it comes down to it, it’s an individual sport.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP)—So much for a lack of Olympic experience.
After a workmanlike win over Switzerland in the opener, the U.S. men’s hockey
team is suddenly loaded with it.
Bobby Ryan scored late in the first period, and David Backes and Ryan Malone
added goals in the second to help the youngest collection of American hockey
players since the NHL began supplying talent for the 1998 Nagano Games top
Switzerland 3-1 on Tuesday.

Whistler (AFP) - Germany's Maria Riesch believes the hype surrounding Lindsey Vonn's shin injury will not hinder the American's drive for Olympic glory, indicating Thursday she herself believed her rival will ski through the pain barrier.
"I've had a similar injury and I know how uncomfortable and painful it can be - but I don't think it will hold her back that much," said Riesch.

Vancouver (AFP) - Downhill skier Manuel Osborne-Paradis celebrated his 26th birthday on Monday and hoped to celebrate in style at the weekend by lifting Canada's homeground Olympic Games gold medal curse.
Canada has staged the 1976 Olympic Summer Games in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary, but failed to toast a gold medal winner in either edition.
