TORONTO (AP)—Longtime speedskating official Jean R. Dupre has been appointed
the new CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee.
Dupre spent 15 years as director general of Speed Skating Canada. He

The USA men’s pursuit team did us proud today, finishing 21 hundredths of a second behind the Canadian team. Team leader Chad Hedrick was hoping for gold, as he plans on retiring after this Olympics, but they weren’t expected to make it this far, so he shouldn’t be too disappointed. Teammates Brian Hansen and Johnathan Kuck, both 19, are sure to be back in 4 years

Olympic speed skating: Germany wins gold, Japan silver and Poland takes bronze. The Canadian women's pursuit, ranked No. 1 and world record holders, were shockingly dispatched by the Americans in a quarter-final match-up Friday night. Kristina Groves, Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler won their C Event race Saturday over the Netherlands in a time of 3:01.02 to conclude their Games.

WEST VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- They don't raise snowboarders in the Netherlands. It's kinda hard when there are no hills.
They do raise speedskaters there, however, and good ones at that.
Nicolien Sauerbreij decided to take the road less traveled, and on Friday, she made history. Skating nimbly over the slush that claimed many of her competitors at mushy Cypress Mountain, Sauerbreij won the women's parallel giant slalom, the first gold medal in snowboarding for a country that's barely above sea level.

Charles Hamelin could easily be the next Canadian gold medallist. The short track speed skater set an Olympic record in his quarterfinal heat in the 500m skate earlier this evening, with a time of 40.770.
Hamelin also made it through the semifinal heat, along with teammate Francois-Loius Tremblay. The third Canadian to make it to semifinals, Olivier Jean, was disqualified. The men's finals will be underway at 7:15pm.

RICHMOND, B.C. ' Canada's world-record holding women's speedskating team pursuit trio was eliminated in the Olympic quarter-finals by the United States on Friday at the Richmond Olympic Oval in a shocking upset.
The threesome of Kristina Groves, Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler posted a time of three minutes 2.24 seconds to lose by 24/100ths of a second to the Americans. They had set the world record of 2:55.79 at the World Cup stop in Calgary in December and were prohibitive favourites to claim gold.

Vancouver (AFP) - Dutchman Sven Kramer, who cost himself gold with a 10,000-metres blunder, will try to erase another stinging Olympic memory that has haunted him for four years when the team pursuit event begins Friday.
Kramer fell in the 2006 Turin Olympics team pursuit semi-finals to cost his favored lineup a berth in the final. The Dutch bounced back for bronze but the failure in what seemed a certain gold medal event lingered at Vancouver.
